The number of counterfeit Scottish banknotes discovered and removed from circulation during 2007 remains only a very small percentage in relation to the total number of genuine notes on issue. From Table 1 below you can see that the number of counterfeit notes represents only 0.02% of the number of genuine banknotes on issue, which at the end of 2007 stood at over 370 million notes.

At 74,454 the number of counterfeit notes discovered and removed from circulation has decreased during 2007. Chart 1 shows comparative figures for 2006, 2005, 2004 and 2003.

The face value of counterfeit notes removed from circulation also decreased during 2007 to around £1.7m. Chart 2 provides figures for the face value of counterfeit notes removed from circulation from 2003 onwards.
